Scar Revision Surgery

Scar revision surgery is a Surgical Procedure used to remove an existing scar.

It is then stitched very neatly so it heals much better and more neat than the original scar, meaning the new scar left behind is much more subtle.

When Do We Use Surgical Scar Revision?

Scars sometimes form in response to a wound, burn, acne  or infection and, depending on the cause of the scar, there are also many different methods of treating them non-surgically which you can read about on our Scar Treatments page.

With certain scars such as chickenpox scars, acne scars , as well as some surgical scarring, only a surgical method is going to give excellent results to these, so the best option is to remove the scar completely and bring the wound together to make it look much neater and smoother.

What Is The Process Of Scar Revision?

You will be seen and assessed initially by the doctor who will take extensive medical history and examine the scar, along with your skin, to assess what the best method of treatment will be. The doctor will discuss with you what the best options are for you to achieve the level of result you are looking for.

If Surgical Scar Revision is the best option for you then you will be referred to one of our extremely experienced Plastic Surgeons, who are experts in this area, and have truly fantastic success rates of reducing scars.

They will assess you and explain the results you are likely to achieve, as well as provide costs and the surgical procedure can be booked in, if you wish to go ahead.

Depending on the type and size of the excision, you may need a second appointment at least 2 weeks before the treatment day, and blood tests, but for most small simple excisions we can use a Local Anaesthetic so this will not be required.

Before Your Scar Revision Surgery

You will meet with your specific Surgeon and allocated Patient Coordinator numerous times before your surgery to assess your suitability for the procedure, and to discuss the possible risks and complications. The Surgeon will confirm what is expected and you will sign a patient consent form once you are happy and be taken through all the details of your procedure.

You will need to attend a Pre-Operative Assessment between 2-5 weeks prior to your surgery date. This is where you will come and meet either our Registered General Nurse or Senior Doctor and they will go through your medical history, take your measurements (height, weight, BMI) and perform a blood and MRSA test to ensure you are fit for surgery!

It is also important that you stop smoking at least 4-weeks before your surgery, and continue without smoking for 4 weeks afterwards.

At Zenith Cosmetic Clinics, our patients are at the heart of everything we do. Having a surgical procedure is an extremely personal choice and only you can make the decision to go ahead. We encourage you to take away all of the information, digest it and spend some time to really think about whether you want to go ahead with the procedure. We are there at every step to answer your questions and offer advice – we want you to be happy and comfortable with your decision.

Following Your Scar Revision Treatment

Stitches may be removed if you were not giving dissolvable stitches, however this will depend on the area treated. Your Surgeon will discuss this and all other aftercare with you.

FAQs

Yes, usually this is the case. However we do have many patients from around the United Kingdom that have to travel 5-6 hours to receive this treatment from us. For this reason, we have set up a video consultation service to ensure you do not need to make frequent trips to the clinic and everything can be done in one day. If this also applies to you, please explain this when you make your initial call we can arrange for a video consultation that can help to decide what the best options are for you!

Yes, any stitches that are not dissolvable. Normally we will remove stitches in 3-10 days, depending on the area of the scar and treatment.

No, not necessarily. Usually this treatment is performed  using a Local Anaesthetic which numbs the area instead of putting you to sleep completely, but your preferences are taken into account during consultation and we can happily perform the treatment under full General Anaesthetic in our clinic if you would prefer.

If this is the case, you would normally still go home the same day, ensuring you are with someone who is able to drive you home, and you will be given the mobile number of the Theatre Manager to call, 24/7 if there are any concerns.
