There are many reasons why you may develop Gynaecomastia, including a hormonal imbalance, due to certain medications, obesity and drinking too much alcohol.
In some rare cases, it can also be caused by a disorder or disease.
What Is Gynaecomastia?
Gynaecomastia is the medical term for when a man, or teenage boy, has enlarged breast tissue (also known as “Man Boobs”). It is not uncommon for Gynecomastia, or Pseudogynaecomastia, to occur during infancy and puberty, however this can also occur in adult men and can be due to a hormone imbalance, or an association with certain medical conditions.
What Is Pseudogynaecomastia?
Pseudogynaecomastia refers to enlargement of the breast where there is no enlargement of the glandular breast tissue in the breast, this means that there is only fat in the male breast.
The difference between Pseudogynaecomastia and Gynaecomastia is very important as Pseudogynaecomastia can be treated by Liposuction alone, whereas to get the results that most men want if they have true Gynecomastia, surgery is the only successful option.
What Can Be Done to Improve the Look of My Chest?
There are 2 options here at Zenith Cosmetic Clinics, Male Breast Reduction surgery (Gynaecomastia) performed in our on-site Operating Theatre under a General Anaesthetic, or Fat Removal which can be performed, if there is no glandular tissue, and if the skin is not too loose.
Male Breast Reduction Surgery
This can take about an hour to complete and will give the best results. It is performed by one of our highly experienced Plastic Surgeons.
To start with, the Surgeon cuts around your nipple and may make a vertical incision underneath, towards the crease under your breast. They will remove some of the skin and some of the breast tissue. In addition, Liposuction can sometimes be used to help remove any extra fatty tissue. If you have larger breasts, your Surgeon may also decide to make a small cut in the crease-line or fold underneath your breast. This will then give you an anchor-shaped scar.
If your chest is particularly large or droopy in shape, your Surgeon may choose to remove your nipple and areola completely. He will then re-stitch them back in place but at a higher position to give a more natural shape and location.
Usually during breast surgery, your Surgeon places small drain tubes into the cuts. This then helps allow any excess fluid to drain away, helping the wounds to heal cleanly. Your cuts will be closed with dissolvable sutures or stitches, leaving the drain tubes in place. To complete the procedure, your breast area will be bandaged to support the tissues. All of these details will be discussed with you before your surgery date.
With the vast majority of patients, a fine cut underneath the nipple is all that is required. This method can treat all issues from slight enlargement to severe abnormalities.
Fat Removal
BodyTite or Vaser Liposuction are both similar to procedures to Liposuction but are more gentle options. They are used to remodel the chest by removing unwanted fat cells, re-contouring the area and smoothing out the skin.
Who Are Male Breast Reduction Procedures Suitable For?
The first step for anyone considering Gynecomastia Surgery or BodyTite is to see our Senior Doctor or Surgeon who can tell you at your consultation whether Gynecomastia Surgery treatment or BodyTite will be the best option for you.
This is procedure designed for men only, if you are a woman and are looking for a Breast Reduction you can visit our page for more information: Breast Reduction Surgery
Gynaecomastia Side Effects and Risks
For Male Breast Reduction Surgery as well as the standard risks associated with having a General Anaesthetic which will be discussed with you prior to surgery, you may also experience:
- Swelling
- Bruising
- Pain (which can be helped with over-the-counter medicines)
- Minor bleeding
- Scarring
- Developing a lump or swelling inside the breast, which is common, and is caused by blood or fluid collecting
- Numbness which can be caused by small nerves injured during surgery. Any pain or numbness will normally settle after a few weeks, in rarer situations it can remain for some months
Results
Gynaecomastia / Breast Reduction Surgery
Your final result cannot usually be seen until 6-months after the operation, but you will be able to see some improvement as soon as the first month post-operation. You will increase your chances of getting good results if you keep at a healthy weight and do not smoke.
BodyTite for Male Breast Reduction
The skin can be seen to tighten immediately during the procedure. We are confident that the vast majority of patients will get 90% of the result that they want by the end of the procedure.
Before Your Procedure
The first step in the process is a consultation to understand whether you require full surgery, or your expectations can be met using a less invasive option.
If Surgery is the option for you, you will meet with your specific Surgeon and allocated Patient Coordinator before your surgery to assess your suitability for the procedure, and to discuss the possible risks and complications. The Surgeon will confirm what is expected and you will sign a patient consent form once you are happy and be taken through all the details of your procedure.
You will need to attend a Pre-Operative Assessment between 2-5 weeks prior to your surgery date. This is where you will come and meet either our Registered General Nurse or Senior Doctor and they will go through your medical history, take your measurements (height, weight, BMI) and perform a blood and MRSA test to ensure you are fit for surgery! You will normally also have a second consultation with the surgeon to confirm you understand everything that has been discussed.
It is also important that you stop smoking at least 4-weeks before your surgery and continue without smoking for 4 weeks afterwards.
Gynaecomastia Aftercare
After your Male Breast Reduction surgery your chest will look swollen and bruised, and it may feel much firmer to the touch. You will be able to go home the same day once you have been discharged but please remember, you will not be able to drive yourself home after your operation.
You will also need to wear a garment for 6-weeks after your operation (morning and night) and will have regular post-surgical appointments at the clinic to make sure you are healing correctly.
Your bandages will be removed after a few days, also at the clinic, and you should be able to return to work after about a week or so.
For the first 3-weeks after the operation, we advise you not to lift anything heavy, or do any heavy or manual work. The majority of men resume normal working and physical activities within 2-3 weeks of their operation.
Following BodyTite , you will need to wear a pressure garment and should be able to return to work within 2-3 days.

FAQs
Does the Gynecomastia surgery hurt?
Not at all, the procedure itself is performed under a General Anaesthetic so there is absolutely no pain. You may, however, experience some soreness during recovery. Please do see the “Side Effects and Risks” section for further information on this.
How long does it take?
The Gynecomastia surgery itself should only take about an hour, depending on the work involved. As this is done under General Anaesthetic, you will be put to sleep for the duration of this.
How much does Gynecomastia cost?
With any surgery, the cost involved is dependent on your individual circumstances and what it will take to reach your individual end result. You will be able to find out the cost of your treatment following your consultation with the Surgeon, after they have assessed the area and listened to your concerns.
At Zenith Cosmetic Clinics, we do have finance options available over £2,500 which means you can pay for your surgery in manageable and affordable payments. Find out more by requesting a call back today.
How long do the results last?
The results are normally permanent if you do not put on weight.
How do you know if you have Gynecomastia?
It requires a medical examination to decide this and sometimes an ultrasound scan to be sure.
Can Gynecomastia go away with exercise?
The fat will certainly reduce with exercise, but the glandular tissue will have to be removed with surgery – there is no other method of removing this.
