Commonly referred to as a ‘nose job’, rhinoplasty is a type of cosmetic surgery available at Zenith Cosmetic Clinic in Nottingham.
Our most prominent facial feature, the nose is a large contributor to the way we look.
Minor alterations in the shape of the nose can have a drastic effect on appearance.
For many people, confidence in their appearance can be majorly increased by restructuring this one feature, improving self-esteem and mental health.
For others, rhinoplasty is a way of solving medical conditions and improving quality of life.
Using either open or closed surgery, rhinoplasty is perhaps the most direct way to restructure the size or shape of the nose. It is more permanent than non-surgical procedures, reducing cost spent over time and leaving you with a natural look.
At Zenith, rhinoplasty is performed by our world-renowned specialist in Nasal and Sinus Surgery, Professor Sama.

People generally have nose surgery for two reasons: cosmetic or medical.
Cosmetic reasons revolve around dissatisfaction with the appearance of the nose.
For example, if you believe your nose to be too large or too small; too crooked or too uneven. Perhaps you have a wide bridge, a nasal hump, or a drooping tip.
Maybe you are self-conscious about the size of your nostrils. Many people come to us who have suffered from a broken nose in the past. Rhinoplasty can improve facial symmetry and balance the proportions of the face, leaving you much more comfortable with your appearance.
Medical reasons for rhinoplasty include breathing abnormalities caused by a defective nose structure or blocked sinuses.
The most common condition like this is a deviated septum, where one side of your nasal passage is smaller than the other.
Sometimes this leads to difficulty in breathing or sleeping, nosebleeds and sinus infections. Rhinoplasty can restructure the internal workings of the nose as well as the outward appearance, improving quality of life for many people.
Depending on which condition your rhinoplasty is intended to solve, you will have either open or closed surgery. It is natural to be apprehensive about surgery. It is a big decision and requires seven days recovery after the procedure.
Rhinoplasty surgery is performed under local or general anaesthetic.
This means that you will not feel any pain during the procedure. Painkillers will be administered afterwards to control any levels of discomfort you may feel post-surgery.
Note: Smoking is to be avoided for at least four weeks before your surgery and four weeks afterwards.
Open Rhinoplasty – During this procedure, an incision is made in the soft tissue between the nostrils (columella), allowing the skin to be folded back. The surgeon will then be able to see the underlying nasal structures. This procedure is typical for nose reduction, where bone or cartilage is removed from the nose to make it smaller.
Closed Rhinoplasty – Incisions are made internally, inside the nasal passageways. This procedure is typical for reshaping the nose tip.
For some procedures where the nose is made bigger, such as nose augmentation, cartilage or bone must be taken from elsewhere on the body. This could be from the ears or the hips, the elbows or the skull.
Zenith Cosmetic Clinic in Nottingham aims to support you along every step of this life-changing journey. Your comfort is our primary concern, and we are on hand to answer any questions you may have.
The first step is to book a consultation with our brilliant rhinoplasty surgeon, Professor Sama. You will meet on at least two occasions before surgery, and these sessions will give us a chance to talk through a course of action tailored to your requirements. You will need to sign a patient consent form in order to proceed and must be over eighteen years of age to do so.
The next stage is a pre-operative assessment which takes place 2-5 weeks prior to surgery. This is essentially a medical examination performed by one of our specialists to assess whether or not you are fit enough for the operation.
Professor Sama will perform the surgery, after which you will need around seven days recovery. He will also see you for a follow-up appointment to ensure that your recovery is progressing smoothly and that you are satisfied with the results.
After rhinoplasty surgery, it is usual for a splint to be applied to the nose and the nostrils to be packed for support. This will feel strange, as you will be unable to breathe through your nose, but you will soon adjust. The packing will be removed after 4-7 days, and the splint after 7-10 days.
Pain medication will be prescribed to alleviate the side-effects of surgery, such as facial bruising, swelling and general discomfort. Surgery is hard on the body at first, and you should not be concerned if your face appears puffy or the areas around your eyes swell. Elevating your head for the first few days of recovery will reduce swelling, but expect effects to linger well beyond two weeks.
In fact, it can take months for swelling to disappear completely, but after that, the full results of the operation will be seen and you can delight in your new appearance.
Things to avoid during your immediate recovery period include:
We will give you detailed aftercare instructions after your rhinoplasty operation and if you have any questions, just give us a call.
