Botulinum toxin injections, or as they’re more commonly known, Botox injections, are a medical treatment first used back in 1977.

Stereotypically, Botox is known for its cosmetic applications and it is commonly associated with improving the look of crow’s feet lines, and frown lines between the eyebrows. However, the capabilities of Botox go far beyond treating your wrinkles… From having Botox to stop sweating right through to Botox to treat a lazy eye, take a look at the benefits of Botox you didn’t know below!

Botox For Sweating

Sweating is a very normal bodily function, used to regulate our body’s temperature allowing heat loss through evaporation. Even excessive sweating is normal from time to time, especially when exercising or in hot climates. However, it can become a problem when a person starts to have ‘severe excessive sweating’; where a person sweats intensely for no given reason. If this is the case, it can be diagnosed as hyperhidrosis, a condition which can be embarrassing and can also get in the way with someone’s daily activities. You might not be aware, but Botox can actually be used to treat hyperhidrosis. Most commonly, this is for sweating of the armpits, but depending on where a person is affected it can be used to address sweaty palms of hands or feet.

Botox Injections For Migraines

It is estimated that there are 190,000 migraine attacks experienced every day in England. Generally, a migraine will come with severe throbbing pain on one side of the head, and it can also be accompanied by sensitivity to light, sound and smell as well as feelings of nausea or even vomiting. It can be extremely debilitating and have a major impact on a person’s everyday life.

Botox was actually approved as a migraine treatment by the NHS back in 2012. Through research, it has been suggested that Botox can help to reduce blood pressure within the brain by relaxing muscles around the head. It might also reduce or prevent the nerves’ ability to send pain signals during a migraine [source]. Research is still undergoing, but the discoveries to date are amazing!

Botox For A Lazy Eye

Strabismus, as it is more formally known, is the medical name for a lazy eye or crossed eyes. Amazingly, Botox was first used to treat this condition back in the 1970s! The treatment works by changing the actual position of the eyes, and it still widely used today. Anaesthetic drops are used to numb the eye so that Botox can be injected directly into the eye muscle. The use of Botox helps to correct the weakened muscle which is what causes the misalignment (or a lazy eye). Who would have thought Botox was capable of such things!

Botox For Incontinence

The NHS estimates that between 3 and 6 million people in the UK have some degree of urinary incontinence. It is especially common in women who have been through a pregnancy, childbirth or the menopause. Incontinence generally occurs when the bladder wall muscle is overactive and in turn, this can lead to urinary leakage. Understandably, this can be embarrassing for men and women alike. Surprisingly, Botox can actually be used to help bladder problems; reducing both the frequent need to go to the toilet and urinary incontinence by as much as 75% in women.

Botox For Vaginismus

Vaginismus is a condition where the vagina suddenly involuntarily tightens up just as you try to insert something into it, an experience which can be both painful and distressing. Not only is this uncomfortable for those affected, but it can also have a significant impact on their personal relationships with their partner.

Currently, research within the area of sexual health is looking at the use of Botox to treat vaginismus! Whilst it is not a treatment typically carried out in isolation, it can be highly effective when combined with the use of dilators and psychotherapy.
