What are stretch marks?
Stretch marks are caused when the skin rapidly stretches as a result of sudden growth or weight gain (for example, during puberty or pregnancy). The stretching of the skin causes the middle layer of skin (the dermis) to tear; allowing the deeper skin layers to show through, forming stretch marks.
Stretch marks can occur anywhere on the body that the skin has been stretched, but they usually affect areas where fat is stored, such as the:
- tummy (abdomen)
- upper arms
- shoulders (in bodybuilders)
What can be done to remove my stretch marks?
The best results are obtained on stretch marks that are newer (less than 12 months). We offer a few different treatments at the Clinic that can improve the appearance of your stretch marks:
- Fraxel Laser Resurfacing
This method uses scattered pulses of light to create microscopic wounds within the stretch mark. This in turn encourage the dermis to heal. This fantastic treatment is great for fresh stretch marks that are still red/pink. We recommend a course of five to get the best results.
- Fractora RF Laser
Another laser treatment that works slightly differently but also gets fantastic results.
- Combined Treatment: Dermaroller & LPG
This treatment works well on white stretch marks. We recommend 3-4 treatments. The LPG machine is often used to treat cellulite and in this context the skin and tissue stimulation acts to increase blood flow to the area and encourage the skin to heal itself following on from the dermaroller.
- PRP Therapy
We would recommend a course of three treatments of PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) for stretch marks. PRP uses your own blood to promote collagen growth underneath the skin and therefore heal itself (and the stretch mark).
What results can I typically expect?
The fresher the stretch marks are, the better your results will be. We recommend a course of treatment while they are less than 12 months old and still red/pink if possible. White/silver stretch marks are more difficult to treat but we have got good results with past patients.
